Operations Manager

This is a leadership and management position within Wright-Way Rescue. This position is responsible for overseeing the general management for Wright-Way Rescue’s North Shore Humane Center and Chicago area activities and events. The Operations Manager is also responsible for managing the integration of Wright-Way Rescue staff into the organization culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the determination of Wright-Way Rescue’s mission.
  • Oversee all roles and responsibilities.
  • Lead the development of the organizational capabilities and capacity required to implement the strategies.
  • Ensure Wright-Way Rescue employees understand the intended culture and act in accordance with it to achieve optimal results and employee engagement, and represent Wright-Way Rescue’s brand.
  • Ensure that Wright-Way Rescue employees understand the role that they play in building, sustaining, and communicating that brand to the public.

Operation Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that there is alignment with the Executive Director and lead team at the Wright-Way Rescue Admission & Medical Services Campus on the role of the adoptions, spay/neuter, medical care and other programs.
  • Work with the Executive Director and lead team to define what the animal-saving goals are, as well as any other quantitative and qualitative measures of success.
  • Participate in the development of strategies for what must be done to achieve those animal-saving goals for 2015-2020. This includes all strategies related to adoption, spay/neuter, and partnering programs, as well as any other local initiatives and animal-saving services.
  • Respond to all complaints immediately and work to find a solution. All current medical concerns will go through the animal health and welfare manager however the follow up and customer service role will be that of the Operations Manger.
  • Build the capabilities and capacity to implement the chosen strategies. This includes developing the organizational and individual capabilities in the following areas:
    • Performance measurement and reporting,
    • Delivery of adoption services, veterinary services, volunteer program, foster program, training program, ConnectUS, and other partnering programs
    • Supplies and other inventory procurement and management
    • Facilities, equipment and utilities procurement and management
    • Staffing selection, management, development and retention
    • External and internal communications
  • Work closely with departments to ensure budgets are met
  • Serve as the Wright-Way Rescue principal liaison with all community partners: shelters, rescue groups, municipalities, elected officials, and others as relevant.
  • Create, develop and implement plans for Wright-Way Rescue’s involvement in designated key communities. This includes developing model no-kill strategies in target communities.
  • Represent Wright-Way Rescue at major local events and conferences including public speaking and making presentations on a variety of topics related to our mission.
  • Develop, communicate, motivate and sustain a predisposition within the North Shore Humane Center employees toward continuous improvement and toward innovation so as to save more animals.

Skills and Experience:

Solid leadership and management experience: 5+ years of proven successful experience, including overseeing strategy, operations, budgeting and staffing.

  • 5+ years of experience working for or with a humane organization or similar field preferred.
  • Experience with reviewing statistical information to inform program direction.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to act decisively in difficult and fast-paced situations.
  • Experience with a staff size of 30+ and a management style of delegation and empowerment of a management team.
  • Experience developing and implementing management policies in a positive and fair manner.
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism are necessary for this position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to understand and manage a budget.
  • Proven attention to detail with advanced organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Wright-Way Rescues' position on issues.
  • Experience with overseeing moderate sized events.
  • Experience working with volunteers and donors.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Proficiency with Google Docs, as well as Microsoft Windows and Office applications, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Comfortable learning new systems, including online information systems.
  • Willing and able to travel on occasion.
  • Valid Driver's License with access to transportation to travel on organization business.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of transportation.
  • Ability to be in a shelter environment and handle dogs of all sizes and cats when necessary.
  • Able to drive a Wright-Way Rescue van or other Wright-Way Rescue vehicle when necessary.

Animal Caregiver - Full Time

Caretakers have a hands-on role in the caring and cleaning of the animals at Wright-Way Rescue. Sanitation, cleanliness, and the ability to handle a physically demanding job are a key factor in this position. We are looking for full-time workers with flexible scheduling.

Essential Duties:

  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the animal enclosures and facility
  • Providing food, water, clean/dry bedding and toys to the dogs, puppies, cats and kittens
  • Ensuring sanitation protocols are being followed to maintain the health and wellness of the animals
  • Following the guidelines taught regarding safe animal interaction
  • Help potential adopters meet their new family member

Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work
  • Ability to handle physically demanding situations
  • Be able to handle various sizes of dogs and cats
  • Be limited to a 20 minutes or less commute
  • Working well in a team environment

Client Services Specialist

At Wright-Way Rescue, a nonprofit and no-kill animal rescue, our Client Services Specialists assist with the scheduling and recording of all adoption related administrative duties.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities include:

  • Screen incoming applications within the allotted time and respond promptly to those interested in adoption.
  • Help match adopters with the correct pet for their home.
  • Assist with scheduling adoption appointments.
  • Answer incoming calls and respond to phone message, while always providing friendly and positive customer service.
  • Clean and provide basic care for ConnectUS animals as instructed.
  • Be responsible for all paperwork related to adoption records - prepare records for adoption floor.
  • Assist with regular inventory of office supplies.
  • Assist with programs as assigned IE Birthday parties, special events, etc.
  • Perform landlord authorization calls and record results.
  • Clean and maintain front lobby and main office.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Experience with: Microsoft Office (required), PetPoint (preferred), and Google Apps.
  • Be capable of working independently, with no direct supervision at times.
  • Must be able to work with all dogs (all breeds) and cats, including those with health concerns/conditions and all sizes and energy levels.
  • Resourceful, roll up the sleeves attitude. The successful candidate must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically demonstrate flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
  • Knowledgeable of breeds, care giving, and characteristics of animals.
  • Ability to work some evening and weekends.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations and effective communicator/writer.
  • Must have a strong understanding of dog body language or ability to learn.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 30 pounds.
  • Long exposure on a daily basis to dogs of all temperaments, sizes and medical conditions.
  • Ability to effectively interact with and handle all animals including cats and dogs.
  • Manual dexterity for keyboarding and computer work.

Dog Trainer

Wright-Way Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue, is looking for an experienced dog trainer to lead its training program. All applicants should have group instruction experience in a professional capacity, such as at a shelter, kennel, or training facility.

Wright-Way is seeking an individual that can help with internal training needs and behavior modification, temperament testing, and work directly with adopters to resolve post-adoption behavioral challenges.

The Wright-Way Rescue trainer will be responsible for:

  • Leading and scheduling weekly training classes
  • Plan and run training seminars
  • Answer training questions from Wright-Way adopters
  • Process payment for classes
  • Encourage training as a means of shelter dog retention
  • Encourage retail sales of appropriate training equipment
  • Work with Director of Marketing to help promote program
  • Write monthly training e-newsletter to help educate dog owners

Community Relations Coordinator - Volunteer


Essential Duties:

  • Act as event coordinator for outside adoption events and adoption awareness events, while also maintaining partnerships with members in the community.
  • Act as event lead for events hosted by Wright-Way Rescue, including birthday parties, volunteer orientations, school tours, team building, etc.
  • Screen volunteer applications and schedule volunteer training sessions.
  • Maintain volunteer program schedule for North Shore Humane Center and outside community events.
  • Ensure volunteers are staffed and supervised.
  • Work closely with Wright-Way Rescue management, staff, and volunteers.
  • Evaluate all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and recommend and implement changes as appropriate.
  • Serve as a community liaison to enhance the participation in all Wright-Way Rescue services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience / Requirements:

  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • Flexible schedule; some nights and weekends needed 
  • Previous work experience in event planning or animal welfare preferred
  • Have the verbal ability to effectively express ideas and views for communication with adopters, donors, event attendees, etc.
  • Have organizational ability to develop, coordinate and maintain an activities schedule.
  • Have flexibility to adjust to changing conditions and the various details of the job.
